Path of Exile 2’s next big early-access update, patch 0.5: Return of the Ancients, lands on May 29 at 1PM PDT, and it feels like the point where the game’s endgame starts to become its own thing. If you’ve been waiting for a reason to come back, this is it. The update brings a new league, fresh crafting, two ascendancies, and a proper shake-up to the Atlas. Players who care about builds, farming routes, and PoE 2 Items will have a lot to test from day one, especially with the free weekend opening the doors to everyone.

Free weekend and league start rewards
From May 29 through June 1, the full game will be playable for free on Steam, Epic, the standalone client, PlayStation, and Xbox. There’s no awkward trial cap either. You can play the new league, push through the campaign, try the reworked endgame, and keep all progress on your account. If you stick around after that, the Early Access Supporter Pack is half price until June 12 and comes with game access plus 150 store points. During the event, you can also grab a few cosmetics: reach Clearfell Encampment for the Ezomyte Rune Scars skin, beat Count Geonor for the Candlemass Portal, and play through the Discord Quest for 15 minutes to unlock the Runeseeker avatar decoration.

Runes of Aldur changes how crafting feels
The new challenge league is called Runes of Aldur, and its main hook is runesmithing. Instead of just hoping an item lands the right rolls, you’ll be pushing gear in more deliberate ways. Alloys and Fluxes add more control over resistances and modifiers, while the Genesis Tree opens up later crafting choices and rare chase items such as the Absent Amulet. There’s also Runic Ward, a new defence layer that sits under Life. That sounds odd at first, but it means you can stay alive at zero Life if your Ward is still holding. It also fuels 30 new skills with no attribute requirements, so you’ll see plenty of weird build ideas early on.

The Atlas gets a real reason to exist
The old waystone loop is being replaced with five endgame storylines, which should make mapping feel less like checking boxes. You’ll chase Tangmazu through fogged areas, defend the Keepers of the Flame, free a spirit from the King in the Mist, work with Atlas Masters, and head out over the ocean to help Rog find his missing wife. Each route ties into a familiar league-style mechanic, but with new bosses and crafting rewards attached. Fixed points of interest on the Atlas should also make target farming less messy. If you’re planning your first few days, push toward the Fortress early. It’s being positioned as the main hub for Atlas Tree progression.

    Builds, ascendancies, and handy changes
Two new ascendancies arrive with the patch: Martial Artist for Monk and Spirit Walker for Huntress. Both sound built for league starters rather than late-game-only experiments, which is good news if you hate levelling something that only works after expensive gear. Older ascendancies are getting balance changes too, though players will need to test the numbers in real maps before calling winners. The new in-game Build Planner is a big deal as well. You’ll be able to import creator builds, see passive trees, gems, and notes without juggling six browser tabs. Price checking is also easier now: Control + Alt + Click an item to open a market search with its stats filled in.

What to do before the servers open
If you’re jumping in for the free weekend, don’t overthink it. Pick a class that looks fun, claim the easy cosmetics, and use the new systems as you go. Veterans will probably rush Atlas progress and test corruption changes, since Vaal Orbs now multiply existing numeric values instead of rerolling them. That makes Divine Orbs more important before you corrupt anything valuable. Newer players can take it slower and still get a good read on whether the game clicks. If you later decide to keep playing, checking build guides, trade values, or even PoE 2 gear for sale can help you understand what strong characters are aiming for in the new league economy.

At U4GM, we’re watching Path of Exile 2’s Return of the Ancients closely, from runesmithing and Runic Ward to the new Atlas stories and ascendancies. Need a smoother league start?
